Phish on PBS

Friday, 16 July 2004 06:32 by Peter Provost

I don't write about music much, other than an occasional "Now Playing" link on my posts.

But I spent years of my younger life as a hardcore dedicated fan of Phish. Those wacky psychadelic, jam rock boys from Vermont.

I didn't even post when they announced the long forseen breakup back in May.

But, since they aren't coming to Colorado on their current (final) tour, I have to post this:

Select public television stations nationwide will air "IT" a ninety-minute special on Phish's 2003 festival in Limestone, Maine beginning on Monday, August 2 at 10 PM. Shot in breathtaking high-definition video, the program combines exclusive interviews interwoven with live material. It's unquestionably the best footage ever captured of the band playing live.

The program was produced by an award-winning production team, including producer/director Mary Wharton, 2003 Grammy award-winner for her documentary "Legend" on the life of singer Sam Cooke and the editing team of Thom Zimny, who won an Emmy for his work on Bruce Springsteen's "Live in New York City" and editor Alex Hall. Also part of the production team is sound engineer and five-time Grammy Award winner Elliot Scheiner, a pioneer in 5.1 technology, who mixed both the stereo and surround sound versions.

For a list of stations that will be showing it, visit this page at phishook.com.

Now... can someone record the hidef audio for me? I don't have a hidef TV, so I don't care about that yet, but I would love the audio on CD or MP3. :)

Now playing: Alkaline - Headlights

WinAmp Question

Friday, 2 July 2004 03:45 by Peter Provost

I've recently switch back to WinAmp from Windows Media Player. I'm not going to get into the reasons now, but there is one thing that I want to be able to do that I can't figure out...

Can I link to songs together so that they are logically treated like one song? I'm guessing that the answer is to open the tracks in something like SoundForge and actually join them together, but I don't really like that so much. I would much prefer to be able to choose the tracks and logically join them.

Now playing: Tool - Parabol

Ender's Game Movie Update

Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:08 by Peter Provost

For those of you who love Orson Scott Card's book Ender's Game, you'll be happy to hear that the plans for the movie have made an important jump forward:

Variety Magazine announced on 10 February that Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, the writing team that created the X-Men 2 screenplay, have been hired by Warner Brothers to write the second draft of the Ender's Game screenplay.

Harris and Dougherty have already been in contact with Orson Scott Card, the author of both Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, both of which have been optioned by Warner Brothers as the basis for the Ender's Game movie. Card wrote the first draft of the screenplay based on both books.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:57 by Peter Provost

Well, it is almost 4am Wednesday morning and I just got home from the ROTK opener. Man, what a great movie. The war sequences, and there were a lot of them, were absolutely amazing. I've never seen anything quite like it before. All in all, an excellent conclusion to an excellent trilogy.

I haven't quite decided how I feel about the ending though. I don't want to post any spoilers for anyone, so I won't say much more right now.

Keith Brown's New Book Online in RSS!

Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:06 by Peter Provost

Yesterday Keith Brown gave me a call to discuss how the VPC development technique is working out. And as I told him, it is working out pretty well.

Along the way, I mentioned to him that I would really like to have an RSS feed of his new book. He didn't know much about RSS but I convinced him that it was a no brainer.

Well, what do you know... this morning he has a feed for the book. Now it is easy for me to keep up with his new chapters!

Thanks Keith!

Star Wars Kid

Friday, 25 July 2003 07:56 by Peter Provost

I saw this first making the rounds, but it looks like more people have been working on it.

Check out StarWarsKid.com to see what I'm talking about.

UPDATE: Apparently SWK is suing the schoolmates who published the video.

One More Comment...

Friday, 27 June 2003 17:17 by Peter Provost

The movie is over now and I must admit the battle scenes in the final hour are amazing. Without a doubt some of the best CGI I've seen to date. The Yoda fight scene is cool. The fact that they've left hanging how Cancellor Palpatine is going to come out of the closet is interesting.

And then Lucas goes all sappy again and closes with a dumb-ass wedding scene between Anakin and Amidala! Argh!
